Cavs: 2 realistic expectations for Kevin Porter Jr. next season
By Dan Gilinsky
#2: KPJ is often involved in Cavs closing lineups
The second realistic expectation I have for Porter for next season is him often being a big factor in Cavs closing lineups. To me, we could see him in these situations at the 2, or even the de facto primary initiator, and/or at the 1, if he’s proving effective in that type of way, feasibly in a big lineup.
Given that I believe Porter will have an expanded role next season overall, I could very well see the Cavs feature him as a key factor in late-game situations, too, with how he’s one of the club’s best on-ball threats. This is the case even with him seemingly set to be in more of a bench role, still.
In any case, for his development and with Porter being more than capable of taking a noticeable step forward in 2020-21, it seems reasonable to expect KPJ to be regularly involved in Cavs closing lineups. That’s when the chances meet that sort of clutch criteria, if you will.
Also, regarding these situations, another reason why I could foresee Porter getting consistent burn in closing time is that he showed legitimate growth off-ball as last season progressed, too.
What is pretty clear, from my viewpoint, though, is that the 20-year-old Kevin Porter Jr. is destined to showcase why he could be a superstar down the road more and more in year 2. This kid’s got special written all over him, albeit the Cavs still need to expect ups and downs.
But putting him in varying situations in-game should, and I’d assume, will, play out next season.
