Potential Cleveland Cavaliers second-round target #3: Leandro Bolmaro

Leandro Bolmaro is a really interesting prospect and would bring a lot to the Cavaliers. Standing at 6-foot-7, Bolmaro can play the point guard, shooting guard and small forward position with his playmaking abilities.

Bolmaro initiates the offense on Spanish club FC Barcelona and his combination of shiftiness, quickness and vision makes him a dangerous offensive player. Statistically, his numbers aren’t eye-popping but, the potential is there. For Bolmaro, the main concern is his shot as during 24 games across all leagues in 2019-20, he shot only 29.3 percent from three-point range.

Bolmaro is only 20 years old and has plenty of time to work on his jumpshot. Looking at the Cavaliers, they have been able to work with Sexton, Cedi Osman and Nance Jr. extensively, seeing all three of these players turn into more than just respectable shooters.

Defensively, Bolmaro excels as well, giving great effort and aggression on this side of the basketball. Combined that with his mobility and you can see how great he can be if he continues to improve on this side of the ball. The concern is just HOW aggressive he is on defense and this looks to be an issue.

In 2019-20 play for Barcelona, Bolmaro averaged 1.2 steals but also 2.0 fouls per game. In a league like the NBA’s, this aggressive defense would do a lot of harm as these players are more advanced offensively, knowing how to draw fouls and manipulate calls. If the Cleveland Cavaliers can get him to be more patient and relaxed on defense, it would limit his fouls and could help to improve his defense.

Bolmaro’s current situation is interesting. Despite declaring for the 2020 NBA Draft, Bolmaro has recently signed an extension with Barcelona. Bolmaro could be bought out but, the likely outcome seems to be that he will be a draft-and-stash player.

Getting a player with Bolmaro’s skillset in the second round is rare, but it would seem to be a possibility in the early second-round, so perhaps the Cavs target him there.

Seeing as he is still young, even if he is stashed, he would be able to grow alongside our young core.
