2020-21 goal #2 for Sexton for the Cleveland Cavaliers: Leading the team in steals

Another goal Sexton should strive for next season is leading the team in steals. Andre Drummond led the Cavaliers in just his eight games played with them with 1.5 steals per game. As for Sexton, he and Larry Nance Jr. both averaged 1.0 steals per game.

Drummond has averaged at least one steal per game in all but one season, but at times Sexton played the passing lanes well. For instance, in March, Sexton averaged 1.6 steals per game.

Defense though overall, is an area where Sexton needs to vastly improve going into next season, and in the team sense, in particular. Of all the players that have played at least 50 games this season, Sexton ranked third-to-last with a defensive ranking of 117.6, per NBA.com. Sexton will likely never be an All-NBA defender, but it would be beneficial if he could improve to be serviceable on the defensive end.

To be fair, All-Stars Trae Young and Bradley Beal rank toward the bottom of the individual defensive rankings, so defense does not have to be Sexton’s primary focus. Sexton’s ability to score would largely offset his defensive issues, especially as a rotator, but as stated above, it would be beneficial to see some positive strides next year.

Sexton came into this league with a narrative that he was not a great three-point shooter, and this past season, he shot 38.0 percent from deep. That type of thing shows Sexton has the ability to work on and get considerably better at perceived weaknesses.

When it comes to Sexton, there is a lot to be excited about going into 2020-21. Over the last handful of games, he was taking his offensive game to the next level.

Granted, there is room for Sexton to improve his game, especially when it comes to assists and defense. But if there are even marginal strides taken in those areas, he will still turn into more of an all-around player and franchise cornerstone this Cleveland Cavaliers’ rebuild needs.
