Garland’s grade thus far in 2019-20: C+

If a grade had to be assigned to Garland’s season, it would be a C+ as of now. The grade would feasibly change if the current season were to eventually resume, which is an uncertainty at this point, though.

Anyhow, Garland is tied for eighth in qualified rookie scoring at 12.3 points per game, and his ability to score more, record more assists, and turn the ball over less over the last two months of the season is a bit of a positive.

A key area of improvement for Garland is simply consistency, both on offense and defense, though, which is understandable for a young player, even more so playing the game’s toughest position.

In today’s world, fans are often unhappy when they do not see results from lottery picks right away. But when looking at the leap Sexton made from year one to year two, and even as Sexton is a more explosive player, there is a chance Garland could do the same, and the handle is already clearly there for Garland.

Turning just 20 years old in January, Garland has not reached close to his prime yet, and if the Cleveland Cavaliers are patient with their investment, the Wine and Gold could have quite a formidable backcourt in a few years.

The overall grade might not completely reflect it, but there is plenty of reason to believe Cleveland made the right choice by selecting Garland fifth overall last summer; only time will tell.
