Reason #3 to keep Love: He’s an advocate for positive change

The last reason why I would like to see Cleveland keep Love on the roster is not related to stats, or how he performs on the court. This last reason is bigger than any particular game, though, as it’s about something everyone deals with, and that is mental health.

Ever since his article featured in The Players Tribune came out about his struggles in relation to his mental health in March of 2018, Love has been an advocate for promoting mental health awareness throughout the NBA, and in the world as a whole, and that sets quite an outstanding example for others.

“Everyone is going through something.”

Those were the words Love wrote in his personal statement about his own struggles with anxiety. Now more than ever, it seems that mental health is at the forefront of the issues our country is facing. Children and adults are burdened by their own thoughts and feelings, and for a championship-caliber athlete like Love to admit to the world he struggles with the same issues, it gives people someone to look to as a source of inspiration.

Also, during the All-Star Break, Love had the opportunity to sit with former President Barack Obama and other NBA players, including Chris Paul, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, on a panel hosted by the Obama Foundation to celebrate the work players do off the court.

It is inevitable that we will all be faced with adversity at some point in our lives, and Love is someone that the Cleveland Cavaliers would benefit from keeping on their roster.

Along with his campaign for mental health awareness, Love has also stepped up in a big way during these trying times with the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Love was the first player in the NBA to provide support to the workers affected by the league’s suspension.

Love donated $100,000 through the Kevin Love Fund as a means to provide financial support to employees of Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse during this suspension. Shortly after, Dan Gilbert/the Cavaliers organization announced that all of their employees would be paid as if the season was still continuing as regularly scheduled, as was mentioned on the Cavs Official Twitter.

Kevin Love has always been a leader, and voice that promotes positive change both on and off the court. I believe the impact he has had off the court especially is something that cannot be replicated.

Kevin Love is not a superstar player, and as he gets older his numbers will go down, and that is inevitable, but Cleveland would be remiss if they thought the five-time All-Star forward was replaceable.

The Cavs should keep Love in coming years, as he still is a really good player, and has appeared to have complete buy-in with Bickerstaff taking the reigns at head coach and seemingly being the right fit to lead the Wine and Gold forward in their rebuild.
