Lineup #1: The Drummond debut starting unit

The first lineup we will look at was the starting lineup Cleveland head coach John Beilein went with for the game against the Clippers on Sunday. That lineup consisted of Darius Garland at point guard, Collin Sexton at shooting guard, Cedi Osman at small forward, Kevin Love playing his role at power forward, and the newcomer, Drummond, at the center position.

The two young Cleveland guards in Garland and Sexton could benefit from their new teammate, and the rookie, Garland, who leads Cleveland in assists per game with 3.8, per NBA.com, has the vision and ability to feed Drummond time and time again in desirable spots on the floor.

Drummond could add more interior defense to this Cavaliers’ lineup, and provide improved spacing for the other Cavaliers on the floor with his interior presence, too. Additionally, Kevin Love and Andre Drummond could be a formidable frontcourt duo moving forward.

As some may have seen during the game against the Clippers, Drummond set a few screens allowing for Love to come open for some three-pointers. However, we cannot dwell on the potentials and what ifs.

Unfortunately overall this starting lineup, excluding Andre Drummond, performed very poorly in Sunday’s game. Drummond himself said in postgame, per Fox Sports Ohio, that he “didn’t really know many plays yet” in terms of what the Cavaliers were running.

The new center for Cleveland said in the interview he’s focused on making sure the team “gets better” and “pushing the guys to work hard” for the rest of the season, though, as transcribed by Basketball Insiders’ Spencer Davies.

This was part of the reason the team looked “lost” on the court, as Drummond put it.

I believe this lineup can still work once they can play more together and build off each other, but it would also be wise for Beilein and the Cleveland Cavaliers to try their hand at other lineups with the new big man, of course.
