Cavs reveal ‘City Edition’ uniforms on Thursday, and they have a cool concept

The Cleveland Cavaliers revealed their “City Edition” uniforms on Thursday, and the concept behind them is cool for the fans.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have worn their typical, wine, white and gold-related uniforms in most games so far in the 2019-20 season, and have also worn their 90’s throwback uniforms.

I’m a big fan of those, with powder blue, black and orange in them, for the record.

On Thursday, the Cavaliers also revealed their “City Edition” uniforms.

These are essentially combining all 50 seasons of Cavs basketball into one uniform. I see that as a really cool concept, with the team designing them in reference to this milestone year being, as touched on, their 50th season.

The dominant color in them is navy, and there’s a “Cle” script, with a “V-basket” logo in there as well. While there’s a ton going on in these, which I’d realistically give a B for their design, I do understand what the Cavs were going for here.

Anyway, here’s what the City Edition uniforms look like, as the team tweeted out.

Additionally, the Cavaliers recently tweeted out a video highlighting the newly-revealed uniforms, too.

In relation to the new threads, Cavs chief marketing officer, Tracy Marek, had more, and h/t Fox 8’s Jen Steer.

Here’s Marek’s comments, as transcribed by Steer.

"“We are excited to introduce this very special uniform during the Cavaliers 50th season because it encompasses the journey of the franchise that began in 1970,” said Tracy Marek, Cavs chief marketing officer, in a news release. “Every piece of the City Edition uniform is reflective of different eras of Cavaliers basketball and the memories and history made along the way.”"

Again, it is a cool concept for the Cleveland Cavaliers to commemorate their 50 seasons, and it will be cool to see Collin Sexton, Kevin Love and others wearing these uniforms. That will be the case 11 times throughout 2019-20, starting on Nov. 27 against the Orlando Magic.

Here’s a more in-depth background of the design of the City Edition uniforms, per the Cavs/NBA.com.

"“The navy colorway is inspired by the Cavs alternate uniforms that were worn from 2005 to 2010. The front of the jersey acknowledges the uniform worn by the inaugural Cavaliers team (1970-74) with the letters CLE in a bold, gold script accented with a feather.The player number appears in a wine and gold inline typeface that is inspired by the uniforms that debuted when the Cavs returned to the city in 1994.Wine, gold and white hashmarks line the side paneling of the uniform and resemble the design of the Cavaliers uniform from 1974 through 1980, most notably worn during the “Miracle of Richfield” in 1976.Finally, The waistband of the shorts displays an element of the Cavs “V-basket” logo from 1983 to 1994.”"

Along with the newly-revealed uniforms, the Cavs tweeted out the arena concept paired with them.

So what’s the key for both of these?

I’d say it’s can the Cavs perform better in them/on that court?

I wouldn’t exactly expect those to give the Cavaliers superpowers or anything, but maybe this jersey reveal can be a bright spot for fans.

Collin Sexton and the Cleveland Cavaliers are currently sitting at 4-10 in the 2019-20 season, and are losers of five straight games. Their last four L’s have been of the blowout variety, too.

It won’t get easier for the Wine and Gold in the coming stretch, either.

Cleveland will be facing budding MVP candidate Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks next up Friday on the road, and the Cavs will have their work cut out for them.

Again, though, the concept behind these City Edition uniforms is at least cool from a fan’s perspective.
