Collin Sexton

KJG’s Tyler Meitin had his take on a Cavaliers crunch-time lineup here but left Sexton off to begin the season. However, the Cleveland Cavaliers need to find out what they have with the backcourt duo of Darius Garland and Collin Sexton.

They need to figure out quickly if the duo will work together and if they can be Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum 2.0.

Cavs’ second-year point guard Collin Sexton started off slow and inconsistent last year, which isn’t all that surprising for a rookie point guard. However, after the All-Star break, he was their best player, even with Kevin Love on the floor down the stretch. Per Basketball-Reference, over the course of the final 23 games of the season, Sexton averaged 21.7 points per game on 45.1% shooting.

He even nearly led them back from a major second-half deficit against the Golden State Warriors, in Oakland.

Per Free Dawkins:

As noted previously, the change in pace between Sexton and Garland is positive and will keep opposing defenses on their heels.

With the Cavaliers in the middle of a rebuild, it should be a no brainer to pair Sexton and Garland together in crunch time of games to see if this is the direction they want to move forward with, or if they need to move on from one of the young talented guards this summer.

With Sexton being a better perimeter shooter than what was originally thought when he came out of the University of Alabama, he will be able to play off of the ball. However, the Cavs could struggle to defend bigger shooting guards with a Sexton and Garland pairing.
