#1 RFA target – Domantas Sabonis

According to Spotrac, as the Indiana Pacers roster sits right now, they will only have about $10 million in cap space heading into the summer of 2020. That likely will not be enough to retain Domantas Sabonis.

It would be prudent of the Cavaliers to make a run at Sabonis, perhaps even offer him a max offer sheet, which the Pacers will not be able to match without some changes to their roster.

There’s also the pesky fact that Sabonis and Pacers’ center Myles Turner haven’t shared the floor much.

They could feasibly at least begin the season as the starting frontcourt as Ethan Kreiger of 8 Points, 9 Seconds illustrated. If the pairing doesn’t work, Sabonis will be the odd man out as Turner is on the books until 2023 for $18 million per year according to Spotrac.

Pairing Sabonis with Cavaliers’ forward Larry Nance Jr. would be an interesting combination and a seemingly excellent combination.

Nance showed last season that he has worked on his three-point shooting and could take another leap this season. Adding a jump shot to his high-flying finishing makes for a great combination.

Sabonis, on the other hand, is a low post maestro who also has the ability to stretch the defense out to around 18 feet.

Sabonis is also a very good defender and had a defensive rating last season of 104 according to Basketball-Reference. He also had a career season in terms of per-game averages when he posted 14.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, and shot 59% from the floor.

Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey is also bullish on the Cavs making a run at Sabonis, and he brought up a good point in comparing him to Love at the same stage in their career.

Sabonis is started to stretch his range out, just as Love started doing at a similar stage of his career.
