The Cleveland Cavaliers should be drafting towards the top of the 2020 NBA Draft. Who are the top prospects they could take at each of the likely slots they can wind up selecting at?

The Cleveland Cavaliers found out last summer during the draft lottery that with the new lottery odds anything can happen.

The Cavs were tied with the best chance at selecting number one overall (14%) and ended up selecting fifth, which was just one spot from being the worst selection they could have ended up with.

The New Orleans Pelicans had just a 7.5% chance of grabbing the number one pick, and they did just that.

The Cavs currently only have their own first-round pick if they pick in the top 10. If they pick outside of the top 10, the pick will head to the Atlanta Hawks as part of the Kyle Korver trade a few years ago.

If things go as predicted (they never do), the Cavs will likely have the best odds at selecting first again. According to FiveThirtyEight.com, the Cavs are the most likely team to finish with the worst record in the NBA, which would give them the most ping-pong balls this summer.

As has been well documented, the Cavs used the fifth pick to select Vanderbilt University’s point guard, Darius Garland.

Garland is somewhat of a questionable fit with Collin Sexton already on the roster, however, the Cavs did what bad teams should do, draft for talent, not need.

We are going to use FiveThirtyEight’s projections for the Cavs way too early draft targets. The Cavaliers will select no worse than fifth and will have the best odds at selecting number one overall.

It will be important that they land somewhere in the top five where they can draft for both talent and need. As they will be a bad team still, they should be drafting the most talented players available but if the talent lines up with the need, that would be a grand slam for the Cavs.
