Collin Sexton

Though he’s only played one season for the Cavaliers, 20-year-old guard Collin Sexton showed that he could definitely be one of the team’s building blocks in coming years and I believe could have a long, successful career in the NBA at that.

More from King James Gospel

In that one year, Sexton had 16.7 points per game, and was second on the team (among regular rotation players) in scoring, just behind Jordan Clarkson, who had 16.8 points per contest (both per NBA.com).

Though it was a season where Sexton struggled to the start the season overall and struggled mightily on the defensive end of the floor all year, that’s hardly a shock for a rookie point guard, and Sexton closed the year strong offensively, as KJG contributors have hit on ad nauseam, and with the significant growth the youngster showed in a short amount of time and with him shooting 40.2% from three-point range (per NBA.com), I’d think he can keep on an upward trajectory as a player going forward and be a crucial part of Cleveland for a long time.

We’ve hit on Sexton’s work ethic countless times here at KJG, too, and with how hard of a worker he is, I would imagine that Sexton is a model teammate of the highest character, and I would think that the more he’s settled into Cleveland, the more active he’ll be in the community, and maybe he is already, anyhow?

So even if Sexton’s numbers go down a bit in the next one or two years as a scorer (as I believe they will with Cleveland having more weapons), given his amazing work ethic and him reportedly being of the highest character, I would think if Sexton keeps paying his dues for the Cavaliers and improves as an overall player, which I believe he will, that he’ll eventually move up the Cleveland ranks in terms of records, and if Cleveland gets better as a team and eventually makes some postseason appearances with Sexton on the roster, that he could have a good chance of being named to the Wall of Honor at some point.

He’s seemingly made of the “right stuff,” and though the Sexton-Darius Garland dynamic for Cleveland is unclear at this point with potential overlap as scoring guards that will both warrant a good amount of usage and aren’t known to be nearly as talented as passers, I still believe both can be key players for Cleveland for a long time, even if they eventually have to have a good chunk of their minutes staggered.
