Cleveland Cavaliers majority owner/chairman Dan Gilbert was reportedly hospitalized due to stroke symptoms on Sunday, and we’re pulling for a speedy recovery for him and extend our best wishes to his family in this difficult time.
Cleveland Cavaliers majority owner/chairman Dan Gilbert has done so much for so many, and has always been more than willing to help the Cavaliers be a winning franchise by him being as committed as any NBA owner to spend to win.
He is the founder/chairman of Quicken Loans and “is connected to dozens of business and political efforts in Michigan and Ohio,” as the Detroit News’ Nolan Finley and Kim Kozlowski highlighted, and is a real estate mogul as well, with his presence being felt all over downtown Detroit and Cleveland.
Gilbert is clearly as hard-working as it gets, and fans and players on the Cleveland Cavaliers should be grateful to have him as the team’s owner.
That being said, there was some unfortunate news related to Gilbert’s health that broke recently.
The aforementioned Finley and Kozlowski initially reported that the owner of the Cavaliers was admitted into Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital on Sunday due to suffering “symptoms of a stroke.”
Here is an official statement (h/t Fox 8’s Natasha Anderson and P.J. Ziegler) from the Quicken Loans family of companies in relation to this unfortunate news.
"“Early this morning, Dan Gilbert sought care at a local [Detroit] hospital after experiencing stroke-like symptoms. He received immediate medical attention and is currently recovering comfortably. Our collective thoughts and prayers are with Dan for a speedy recovery. The Gilbert family respectfully requests privacy at this time.”"

This is obviously awful news for the Gilbert family, and we wish them the best of luck in this difficult time. Gilbert is only a 57-year-old, who appeared to be in good health, at least all indications led off to be that way, and this news really has to be shocking for all involved, though it is encouraging that Gilbert is comfortably recovering.
As per the family requesting privacy, as Finley and Kozlowski noted, there were no details released as far as his diagnosis and prognosis.
The Cavaliers’ organization, and of course, those affiliated with Gilbert’s business and real estate ventures, have to be very concerned as well.
At least from my perspective as a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers, this has to be really rough for team general manager Koby Altman and the front office, new head coach John Beilein (who is 66 and reportedly had successful heart surgery last year, h/t NBC Sports’ Rob Dauster), the team’s players, and countless others involved in the basketball/business operations of the club.
Additionally, Gilbert’s son, Nick, has been repeatedly suffering as a result of him being born with neurofibromatosis, which, as Finley and Kozlowski mentioned, is a “rare genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow in nerves throughout the body.”
To help against the terrible illness his son is fighting, per Finley and Kozlowski, Gilbert and his wife, Jennifer, have “pledged 64 million into research” to combat the disease.
Once again, we wish Dan the best of luck and send our best wishes to his family in this ever-difficult time.
