A better post-LeBron outlook

Based on a report from The Athletic’s Joe Vardon (subscription required), the Cleveland Cavaliers likely knew James wanted to be in L.A, and Cleveland essentially traded Kyrie Irving for a draft pick (which turned out to be Collin Sexton). The Kyrie trade was always about preparing for life after James and it appears the Cavs knew it was probably coming.

I’m sure Cleveland would’ve liked that Brooklyn Nets pick (Sexton) to be higher, but I’m sure they’re thrilled with Sexton after his rookie season, as they should be. Sexton is a piece the Cavaliers didn’t have for the last time they underwent a rebuild and as KJG has mentioned many times, Collin (along with Cedi Osman), is a nice building block going forward after showing so much growth over the season.

Sexton averaged 16.7 points on 48.0% effective field goal shooting, including 40.2% from three-point range, to go with 3.0 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game, and played in all of Cleveland’s 82 contests in his rookie season (per Basketball Reference), which is a nice start to his career.

Anyhow, the question is just how far away are the playoffs for the Cleveland Cavaliers, and how close exactly are they?

The answer is to be determined as there are questions that must and will be answered this offseason.

One thing we need to keep in mind is the East isn’t a weak conference anymore like it appeared it was a year or two seasons ago.
