Dwyane Wade swapping jerseys with Cavaliers’ Collin Sexton is meaningful
Maybe the Cleveland Cavaliers are expecting too much out of rookie Collin Sexton this year, which seems crazy to assume. However, Dwyane Wade’s swap of jerseys with Sexton is meaningful.
Though he was made the eighth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Collin Sexton hasn’t been electric or provided near the same production that he did at Alabama for the Cleveland Cavaliers. After being given the keys to start for the Cavaliers after eleven games, it’s been a roller coaster ride that has been more down than up for the rookie.
However, maybe Cleveland is expecting a tad too much out of him this season.
After Friday’s sixth-straight loss for the squad, Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade decided to swap jerseys with Sexton. Wade, in his sixteenth and final season in the NBA, has been doing jersey exchanges after every game, gifting some opposing player one of his last threads. The Cavaliers rookie was the latest to receive the honor.
What did Wade have to say to Sexton as they exchanged threads last night? Keep going.
According to Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor, the 20-year old made sure to find Wade during the summer and talk about the game and how he could get better.
It hasn’t completely shown in Sexton’s play this season but according to Wade’s words to the youngster, it’ll all work out in the end.

That makes one wonder if we’re asking too much out of Sexton, who has a huge workload for a rookie with not a ton of help around him, especially with Kevin Love only playing in four games thus far, with his reported toe injury being the culprit.
To think he could come in and be a star in a matter of 50 games seems absurd when you think about it. His shot was going to be a work in progress while he would need some fine-tuning when it came to the passing and defensive aspects of his game.
He was expected to come in and be an immediate game-changer, possibly because Sexton was the first first-round pick in the second post-LeBron era. Maybe it was because he chose to wear Kyrie Irving‘s former number?
Whatever the reason, it’s very possible that the Wine and Gold are growing impatient because their standard of current rookies is pretty high.
But Wade, being a former top-five pick himself, has done enough in the NBA to have his instincts trusted.
Now it’s up to the Cavaliers to be patient.
