The Cavs could once again be respectable thanks to lottery luck

Often repeats itself, and Cleveland Cavaliers fans sure hope it does again in the next draft lottery.

As everyone knows the Cleveland Cavaliers are in another long rebuild mode after the departure of LeBron James last summer, so they should be playing the lottery game in a couple years. The NBA draft lottery has been very kind to the Cavs in recent years, as they won it four times since 2003.  The Cavs have won lotteries where they had good chances, as was the case in 2003 (they tied for the worst record, and got a 22.5 percent chance) and in 2013, with the 3rd-worst record (and got a 15.6 percent chance), per Real GM.

They’ve also overcome very long odds to win in 2011, via the Los Angeles Clippers (who had the 8th-worst record and a 2.8 percent chance), along with 2014 (where they had the 9th-worst record and a 1.7 percent chance, again, per Real GM).

An NBA investigation based on Cleveland’s signing, then quick releasing of Patrick McCaw (first reported by the New York TimesMarc Stein), will be crucial to Cleveland’s future, though. If Cleveland did any wrongdoing, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, Cleveland could lose “future first-round draft picks.”

If the Cavs can be fortunate enough to not have their potential 2019 and 2020 first-rounders taken from them, they’d be in good shape going forward.

One thing that is unique in the NBA is that one guy can potentially change your franchise forever if you win the number one pick. To become a viable contender you need other pieces, but one guy can make you relevant and put you on the map quickly. Those don’t come often, but it looks like we could have that this year in Duke forward Zion WIlliamson.

Mike Schmitz, who covers NBA draft prospects for ESPN, went on to say that Zion is “the best NBA prospect since Anthony Davis” on ESPN’s show, “Get Up.”

It looks like that franchise superstar could be in this draft and with the way Zion is dominating so far, it’s easy to see why people like Schmitz feel that way.

This bodes very well for the Cleveland Cavaliers, because if the ping pong balls fall their way once again they would have another franchise superstar and that would be an enormous win for this franchise.

Most people know how great Zion is on the court, but even off the court from a business perspective, it would be huge.

As everyone knows, Quicken Air Loans Arena is undergoing major renovations and they’re expected to be fully completed for the 2019-2020 season, per Kevin Kleps of Crain’s Cleveland Business.

Zion Williamson is somebody that will sell tickets, and being that renovations will come done by 2019-2020, it would be big off the court to have a mega superstar like Williamson to market. Zion would bring tons of excitement and energy back to the arena and help the surrounding area like James-led teams did.

Currently, it’s difficult for a lot of fans to watch this team, but that could change quickly.

In the 2020 NBA Draft, in which Cleveland has a first-round pick if they select in the top 10 (otherwise their pick would go to the Atlanta Hawks), per Real GM, another great prospect could be coming.
