The Cleveland Cavaliers were not too fond of the play of Patrick McCaw, and reportedly plan to waive him.
The Cleveland Cavaliers haven’t have much of a sample size to evaluate Patrick McCaw, who they recently added to their roster. Nonetheless, they are reportedly “planning to waive” McCaw, per Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic.
The 23-year-old guard only played in three games for Cleveland, but the Cavs chose to move on from him given that the league’s deadline for non-guaranteed contracts becoming guaranteed is Monday, as was demonstrated by Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor.
"“According to sources, the Cavs didn’t see enough from McCaw in a limited time to justify guaranteeing his contract for the remainder of the season.”"

McCaw didn’t exactly set the world on fire in his career with the Cavaliers, as he averaged 1.7 points, 1.0 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 17.7 minutes per game, but obviously, the three-game sample size didn’t give him a ton of time to prove his worth in Cleveland’s rotation.
I understand where the Cavs were coming from here, given that they didn’t want to keep his contract around and didn’t see enough production, but McCaw could be a useful piece in the near future as a quality perimeter defender (especially on the ball) with his 6-foot-10 wingspan.
With Cleveland having the league’s worst defensive rating (per NBA.com) and looking completely incompetent on that end, I would think giving McCaw more of a look in the coming months would be a sensible move.
The Cavs didn’t, though, and in fact, reportedly are “planning to sign free agent guard Cameron Payne to a 10-day contract,” according to Charania.
We’ll see what happens with Payne, who is a player I wouldn’t think Cleveland would keep around long, either.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have lost nine games in a row, and have been getting blown out often in recent weeks. There’s plenty of questions, and not many answers when it comes to which reserve players they’ll be having stick around in the near future.
