The key to the Cleveland Cavaliers bringing back Matthew Dellavedova via trade seems to be helping Collin Sexton improve.

Matthew Dellavedova is already loved by Cleveland Cavaliers fans for what he did during the team’s amazing postseason runs for three years when he was with LeBron James and company. When it comes to this Cleveland tenure for “Delly,” though, it comes down to how he helps bring along rookie point guard Collin Sexton, who was drafted eighth overall in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Sexton has had a solid rookie season overall, with averages of 14.7 points on 48.8 percent true shooting, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 29.7 minutes per game. With all the lineup changes (especially to Cleveland’s starting lineup), Kevin Love only being active in four games due to a reported toe injury, and Cleveland switching head coaches after just six games, it’s been anything but smooth sailing for the rook.

Initially being mentored by veteran George Hill (who eventually went down for about a month due to a reported shoulder injury), Sexton did have a nice stretch of play in his initial time in a starting role. Since, Hill was reportedly traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, and in the reported deal, the ex-Buck, Dellavedova was dealt back to his former team, the Cavaliers.

As we’ve hit on often here at KJG, Delly is a player that is going to bring undeniable toughness, energy, solid perimeter defense and good second unit playmaking when he’s on the floor. So far, he’s been pretty good on both ends of the floor despite not having much playing time yet with his new teammates in Cleveland.

With the Cavs this year, Dellavedova is averaging 9.3 points on 63.9 percent true shooting, 3.6 assists and 1.5 rebounds in 19.4 minutes per game, per Basketball Reference.

So how can we tangibly tell if Dellavedova (the new Sexton mentor), is improving the overall game of the rook the rest of this season and beyond?

The first metric is not rocket science, really.
