Cleveland Cavaliers: Three players they could sign with the 2019 MLE
By Dan Gilinsky
Bullock is another floor-spacer
The Cavaliers currently have one of the best floor-spacers ever in Korver. Although he doesn’t have the track record of Korver, who is fourth all-time in three-point field goals, Bullock has turned himself into a great three-point specialist in his own right. Although he’s been in and out of his team’s lineups throughout his NBA tenure, Bullock has proven to be a consistent sniper.
The last three seasons, he’s converted on 41.5, 38.4 and 44.5 percent of his threes. Last year he ranked second in the NBA in three-point efficiency among qualified players, per Basketball Reference. For his career, he’s had a three-point rate of 54.6 percent. So that accuracy is no fluke. In off-screen scoring in 2017-18, Bullock placed in the 92nd percentile, per Synergy Sports.
He’s able to counter that shooting stroke with good functional cutting and a solid one-dribble jumper after ball fakes. Last year, Bullock placed in the 79th percentile in scoring off hand-offs, and in the 69th percentile as a cutting scorer, per Synergy.
Going into the season at age 28 and as an unrestricted free agent, he could be a younger replacement for an off-screen specialist in Korver and/or the spot-up specialist in J.R. Smith. Bullock’s shooting playing at either the 2 or 3 position would fit in really well with Cleveland’s other young high-usage threats.
He doesn’t to poke and prod with the ball to be effective, and when does put the ball on the floor to counter hard close-outs, he’s a good finisher near the rim. On shots 0-3 feet from the rim, Bullock has converted at a rate of 71.1 percent, per Basketball Reference.
On defense, he has good instincts off the ball, and is generally in the right position. He does job of getting through off-ball screens, and is solid against spot-up threats. In defending against those two playtypes last year, he placed in the 79th and 62nd percentile, per Synergy.
Last but not least, current Chicago Bull Bobby Portis could be another young player ready to bust out.
