The Cleveland Cavaliers should adopt a defense-first mantra next season.

Please don’t laugh at what I’m about to say…

This new Cleveland Cavaliers team could and should build an identity based on defense.

Yes, they ranked 29th in defensive rating last year, only beating out the league-worst Phoenix Suns.

However, this upcoming season, things will be different in Cleveland. Much different.

Or, at least they should be.

Cleveland = Grit

With LeBron James gone, the Cavs are no longer the perennial NBA Finals contender they’ve been for the last four years.

Yet, rather than cry at the prospect of irrelevance, Cleveland fans should rejoice at the opportunity to build a new identity.

One based in grit and determination.

One that grinds out wins and takes it personally whenever a flashier team tries to get cute with the ball.

A Cleveland team focused on defense would not only provide a template to build the team around but a gritty Cavaliers team would perfectly embody the city they represent.

Hardworking. Driven. Competitive through their sheer will.
