Brief storytime about Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Collin Sexton…

One night in late 2016, I was scorekeeping basketball games one night. One weeknight when I started to converse with one of the referees during halftime. He was telling me how he had officiated the Pebblebrook High School vs. IMG Academy game at the Holiday Hoopsgiving Classic and that Pebblebrook’s Collin Sexton was a special talent. Yes, the same Sexton that could now be the Cleveland Cavaliers starting point guard

Having never heard of Sexton, I did what many high schoolers who love sports do: I looked him up and watched his highlights. I didn’t fall asleep until 1:30 that morning, forcing myself to finally stop watching the 7th-ranked recruit in the nation.

Collin went to high school less than an hour from where I live, and I was a bit disappointed after realizing how many times I would’ve seen him play had I known about him–I didn’t follow high school basketball and recruiting as much as I do now.

I also discovered that he was an absolute bucket that night while watching his highlights, especially those of the Hoopsgiving Classic.

End of storytime…

Stephen Curry. Russell Westbrook. Chris Paul. Damian Lillard. Kyrie Irving. These are the five best point guards in the NBA. However you want to arrange them is your choice, but these are as good as it gets in the best league.

For now.

In five years, each of those players will be 31 or older (Irving being the youngest).

They won’t be able to keep up with faster guys, forcing them to give their titles as “best guards in the NBA” to players who are now young and learning–Terry Rozier, Jamal Murray, Kris Dunn, Lonzo Ball, Ben Simmons, De’Aaron Fox, Collin Sexton.

Collin Sexton.

Sexton will be great. He will fill the void.
