The outcome

In each of these scenarios, Kevin Love goes to a team with a lot of large contracts, the Cavaliers get both an extra 2019 first-round pick, a young player and their own 2019 first-round pick back (most likely).

This is a huge win for the Cleveland Cavaliers going forward. The price is low considering the Cavs have almost nothing on the books past 2019-2020.

This also allows the Cavaliers to rebuild the right way and this trade would signal to the league that the veteran Cavaliers are for sale for the right price, including Smith, Hill and Korver.

It would be easy to see the Cavaliers fetching an extra future first round pick for Kyle Korver and possibly a first-rounder for Hill or Smith if they take back a bad contract, similar to what the Brooklyn Nets are doing.

If the Cavaliers are smart, which it looks like Koby Altman is, they would look at bad contracts that end after the 2020 season and target those players and teams specifically.

This means targeting players like Hassan Whiteside, Chandler Parsons, Serge Ibaka, Danilo Gallinari, Ryan Anderson, Allen Crabbe, Joakim Noah, Luol Deng, Evan Turner, and Pau Gasol.

Attach a 2019, 2020, or even a 2021 first round pick and a young player under team control for a few years to one of these contracts, and the Cavaliers should enjoy looking at sending one of either Love, Korver, Smith, or Hill to these guys.

If Hill and Smith, specifically, have a good start to their season, it could be a boon for their trade value.

Expect to see a Cavaliers team of overpriced veterans who don’t play (like the Lakers last year) if they are looking towards a 2020 situation with a lot of young, first round talent, and loads of cap space.
