Cleveland Cavaliers: Ty Lue to advise Luke Walton on coaching LeBron James
Ty Lue is set to meet with Luke Walton to discuss how to coach former Cleveland Cavaliers superstar, LeBron James.
With LeBron James’ departure from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Los Angeles Lakers, all of LA was in excitement, including Luke Walton. Luke Walton has served as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers since the 2016 season.
However, in those seasons Walton has never coached someone with the talent level of James.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Lue plans to set down over dinner to discuss the newly acquired challenge of coaching the three-time champion.
"Lue said he plans to meet with Walton and Lakers associate head coach Brian Shaw — who was Lue’s Lakers teammate for two seasons — in Las Vegas this week to discuss over dinner their new coaching challenge."
Lue came to Cleveland in the offseason of 2014, the same time LeBron came home to the Cavaliers. Lue served as an associate for two years before taking over the reigns after the firing of David Blatt in 2016 and later that season brought Cleveland their first NBA world championship.
"“I’ll just tell them LeBron’s easy,” Lue said. “People get this whole thing built up like he’s hard to coach. It’s not. LeBron’s not the problem. It’s the outside tension that’s the problem. Just put added pressure immediately on the coaches, on his teammates. Now everything you do is under a microscope. … So it’s going to be a totally different change for the Lakers. They’ll be able to handle it.”"
Lue discussed talking to James several times during free agency, but he never wanted to pressure LeBron into a decision. The decision was a surprise to Tyronn Lue, but he ultimately understood the move and was eternally grateful for how LeBron even shaped him over their time in Cleveland.
"“Everybody he’s touched is made better,” Lue said. “Family, friends, organizations, the city of Cleveland, his players, his coaches. He made everybody’s life easier, everybody’s better. It’s tough to lose that type of piece. It was hard to swallow.”"
Now it’s up to Luke Walton, you have just acquired the best basketball player in the world, how will you utilize his complete skill set.
James is going to be playing on a team that isn’t build to extract his best basketball. At his best when surrounded by shooters, the structure of the current Lakers team is centered around selfless basketball.
