2018 NBA Free Agency: Ranking the Cleveland Cavaliers top 25 options
No. 15: Wayne Ellington
Ever since his first year in the league, Wayne Ellington has been slept on as a player and more importantly as a shooter. This past season, he posted a career-high 11.2.
Ellington came into the league after three years at the University of North Carolina. The nine-year veteran has never been a perennial starter yet has been on his fair share of terrible teams.
Another plus about Ellington is he shouldn’t command too much money and shouldn’t draw too much interest from other teams. At 30 years old, Ellington made over $6 million last season. He’d be eligible for the veteran’s minimum and possibly even be valuable enough for the mid-level exception.
Maybe you haven’t heard of Ellington before.
Well, last season, he averaged 2.9 threes per game for the Miami Heat. Ellington would take significant pressure off James with his three-point shooting. Cavs starting shooting guard JR Smith hasn’t been the threat the Cavs have needed, and it’s time for some competition.
Ellington would be a great addition with or without James in Cleveland.
