With Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals and the NBA Draft Lottery, May 15 could be one of the most important single days in Cleveland Cavaliers history.

June 19, 2016. June 26, 2003. May 15, 2018? The first two dates have gone down as a few of the most important single days in the Cleveland Cavaliers history.

Will the third be right there with them?

For those that don’t know, the first date is the day the Cavaliers completed the historic 3-1 comeback in the NBA Finals over the legendary 73-9 Golden State Warriors. The second being the day the Cavaliers drafted LeBron James, arguably the greatest player to ever pick up a basketball.

There are also a few honorary mentions that could be tossed in with the two aforementioned dates.

June 23, 2011, the day the Cleveland Cavaliers drafted both Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson, should be mentioned. And even February 8, 2018, the day the Cavaliers traded about half their team (four trades in total) to completely transform their broken roster.

That said, the potential for May 15 to be the biggest day in team history isn’t too far-fetched.

The Cavaliers, who have a 2.8% chance at landing No. 1 pick and 9.9% chance at a top-three pick, could win the lottery. If they somehow win the lottery, the ushering in of a new era could be upon us. With a top-three pick, the Cavs could draft DeAndre Ayton, Marvin Bagley, or Luka Doncic.

An NBA-ready center, a dynamic pass-first point guard, or a developed playmaking big could be Cleveland’s future, but they’ll need to have luck on their side.

On top of the Cavs odds in the lottery, they also might take a 0-2 deficit in the Eastern Conference Finals. If the Cavs end up taking a 0-2 deficit to an injured Boston Celtics team, this could be the last few games we see LeBron James in the Cavs wine & gold.

While that part is completely skeptical, on the flip side, the Cavs could even the series and be propelled to their fourth straight Finals.

In total, the potential impact May 15 could have on the organization is overwhelming.

From a feared Finals contender to possibly a perennial lottery team, the Cavaliers have an array of potential outcomes, most of which end in Cleveland winning their postseason game along with receiving a pick between 7-9 in the draft.

While those potential outcomes might not change the direction of the team, they will give the Cavs a stable foundation for the future and help ensure another year in the Land for LeBron James.

However, in basketball, just like most things in life, things aren’t always how they should be.

When down 3-1, the Cavs had a 99% to fold and lose in the 2016 NBA Finals. But, they didn’t, and that went down as one of the most important days in team history.
