When age has no limits! LeBron James
By David Scott
LeBron James is defying the odds and outracing Father Time.
Announcing LeBron James: A fresh new-look Akron, Ohio native has just had a break-out season in the NBA.
The future is bright for the 6-8, 250 lb guard-forward straight out of St. Vincent-St. Mary HS (OH)/USA. The overall number 1 pick is exceeding expectations and will be the most sort after player in free agency this summer.
Let’s recap this stellar performance during the NBA 2017-18 season:
- Points: 1st – 2,251
- Minutes: 1st – 36.9
- Assists: 2nd – 747
- Assists Per Game: 2nd – 9.1
- Highest Scoring Game: 2nd – 57
- Efficiency: 2nd – 32.7
- Points Per Game: 3rd – 27.5
Additionally, James’ consistency is as good as it gets, playing all 82 games of the 2017-18 season. There is little doubt LeBron is white-hot right now and can be a cornerstone player for any franchise to win a championship.
The potential of this star is unquestionable. Yet, the mainstream media frequently headline LeBron’s 33 years-of-age.
Headlines include “defying age, better than ever at 33”, “still the King at 33”, and “best age-33 season”. This is not a sole criticism of the basketball media.
We can draw similar parallels in the world of tennis and music as further examples. Swiss tennis ace Roger Federer aged 36 years (also in the midst of a stellar season) and American actress, businesswoman, singer and songwriter Madonna, aged 59 years, who recently released her Rebel Heart Tour concert film, also draw similar headlines.
If ageism in recruitment is an increasing problem in the workplace, then why should the mainstream media continue to put the spotlight on a person’s age? If LeBron, Roger and Madonna require employment to pay their utility bills, give their children an education or help pay off a mortgage then surely we should assess them on their ability to perform their job and not prejudice against them on the grounds of their age.
The playing and life experience of LeBron, with 15-years in the league and a father of three would be an incredible asset within any basketball team. LeBron’s playing ability, basketball mind and life experience is proven success that far outweighs that of any rookie.
