Cleveland Cavaliers: Could Brooklyn Nets pick bring Trae Young to the Land?
The Brooklyn Nets have continued to slide in the rankings, and their sharp decline could help the Cleveland Cavaliers bring in sharpshooter Trae Young.
The last time LeBron James loved a collegiate player, he ended up on “his team” the following season. That said, the King loves Trae Young, and the Cleveland Cavaliers could quite possibly have a top-five pick in this upcoming NBA Draft.
The instance I just mentioned happened in the 2014 NBA Draft. The funny thing about the entire situation is that LeBron James virtually requested Shabazz Napier to be drafted and then returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers the ensuing offseason, just a few weeks after the draft.
Here’s exactly what James said regarding the former Husky. Take a minute and think about how much buzz would be created if James tweeted this about Trae Young following this season.
LeBron James, if he chooses to leave, is setting himself up to do the exact same thing. This time, however, the Cavaliers might actually get a player that will transcend their team.
Although like Napier, Young’s shooting and perceived shiftiness are what makes him one of the most coveted collegiate players. Both were dominant collegiate players but relatively undersized, one reason for Napier’s struggles in the NBA.

Trae Young has been making noise in the NCAA this season. He is the feared leader of Oklahoma University and is currently putting up numbers that have never been seen before at the collegiate level. Young is the only collegiate player to average over 25 points per game and 9 assists per game, assuming he can sustain those numbers for the remainder of the season. His shooting combined with his handling and vision are a lethal combination that should easily transfer to the NBA.
His 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame might be the only downside as the NBA continues to get more and more physical.
As for the pick, it was brought to Cleveland in the deal that sent Kyrie Irving to Boston. Cleveland received the right to the unprotected Brooklyn Nets 2018 first round pick.
The Brooklyn Nets are currently 19-38 and are just 0.5 games away from being tied for the worst record in the Eastern Conference. Teamrankings.com actually has Brooklyn ending the season with the league’s third-worst record; therefore granting Cleveland over a 95% chance at landing a top-five pick.
A top-five pick would create quite the dilemma for the Cleveland Cavaliers. They should be able to choose from a pool of Marvin Bagley, DeAndre Ayton, Trae Young, Colling Sexton, and Michael Porter Jr. Drafting any of those players in the top-five would not be viewed as a mistake. But drafting only one of those five would appease the King.
At that point, is it the management’s duty take Young to appease the King?
As we’ve seen with the offseason signing of Dwyane Wade and the chaotic reshaping of their team before the trade deadline, this team is dedicated to giving LeBron James both what he wants and needs.
