LeBron James has potential to be the league’s all-time leading scorer
By JR DePierro
As 33-year-old LeBron James approaches 30,000 career points, next up is becoming the all-time leading scorer and possibly reaching 40,000 career points.
LeBron James has been as impressive as ever in his 15th season, averaging 27-8-9. Currently, with 29,959 career points, LeBron approaches the 30,000 point milestone while still in his prime.
This upcoming achievement should not be overlooked or taken for granted. However, it’s time to entertain the idea of him becoming the all-time leading scorer which currently is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387).
Barring the idea of LeBron missing a significant portion of any of the future seasons, I did some number crunching to see what it would take for him to become the all-time leading scorer.
If LeBron averages 26 points over the remaining 39 games, (assuming he plays in all of them) he will add another 1,014 points on top of his current 1,172 points this season. This will give him a total of 30,973 career points by the end of the year.
Now for the fun part.

If LeBron James can continue to win the battle against father time and average 23.5 points over the next five years, assuming he doesn’t retire before then, he would reach 40,020 career points in addition to becoming the all-time leading scorer.
I crunched these numbers while working on the idea of LeBron missing 5 games each season.
If using the averages previously mentioned, LeBron retired in four years he would be just 177 points shy of Kareem. Four years from now he will be 37 years old. In this case, he would most likely continue playing, especially since his sons would likely be on their way into the league, assuming they showcase enough skill in college.
With LeBron James’ ability to score and denial of father time, he is on the verge of making history in the NBA. He has the chance to become the first all-time point leader with 40,000 career points or more. That would be one of the greatest endings to a career possible. It would also give him something else to add his resume for when his fans argue who the greatest player of all-time is.
