INDEPENDENCE, OH - SEPTEMBER 7: Isaiah Thomas

The Cleveland Cavaliers soon-to-be starting point guard, Isaiah Thomas, will be making his season debut tonight against the Portland Trail Blazers.

After waiting all season long, the Cleveland Cavaliers will finally have another dynamic scorer, as Isaiah Thomas is to return tonight, according to an official Cavs tweet. The 5-foot-9 former Husky has garnered quite a bit of attention with his array of tweets which used the #ThatSLOWgrind to keep fans excited for his return.

Following the blockbuster trade of the offseason, Isaiah Thomas found himself on a new team and in a new city. The former Boston Celtic was a key piece in the deal that landed the Celtics superstar Kyrie Irving. Up until this point, Isaiah Thomas has been sidelined with a hip injury that he sustained in the 2017 postseason.

Thomas, who was a top-10 MVP candidate last season, averaged a career-high 28.9 points per game. He also averaged a season-high 3.2 triples per game, which will be huge for the Cleveland Cavaliers moving forward. The only downside to Thomas’ play is his defense. His frame makes it difficult to defend other quick guards.

That said, with IT’s return almost upon us, fans and analysts shouldn’t judge his fit in Cleveland off his first couple games or even first couple weeks in the Cavs wine and gold jerseys. While significantly better than to start the season, the Cavaliers defense is still not what it should be, and Thomas’ return could hurt their defense even more, especially until he gets fully settled within the team’s rotations and defensive sets.

However, although he has defensive woes, Thomas’ return should make the Cavaliers one of the most lethal in the NBA. The Warriors are really the only other NBA team with at least three superstar scorers. If Thomas can come in and give the Cavs 25+ points per game and alleviate the consistent scoring load off James’ shoulders, then the Cavaliers should easily be able to finish this season out as one of the East’s top two teams.

Thomas’ return opens up several unanswered questions, such as if a trade later in this season will be necessary or not. Up until this moment, the Cavs have waited to see how this experiment will play out, and tonight, we get to see the beginning of hopefully a fantastic season for Isaiah Thomas.
