It’s almost the new year, which traditionally means a trade is on the horizon for the Cleveland Cavaliers. This year, however, might be different.
Over the last two seasons, Cleveland Cavaliers’ fans have got used to hearing the trade rumors swirl around their championship-contending team. In the 2015-2016 season, they added Channing Frye to deepen their second unit and make them a better shooting team. In the 2016-2017, they added Kyle Korver to give them a dynamic, game-changing threat off the bench.
This season has a much different feel to it. The Cavaliers have won eighteen of their last nineteen games. They’ve been on a roll, and LeBron James’ dominance has been a huge reason why. Along those lines, the Cleveland Cavaliers will also be getting Isaiah Thomas back in the near future.
Albeit last season’s Cavs were actually ahead of this season’s team. At 24-7, the Cavaliers started last season excellently, unlike this season. It wasn’t until late in the season that the losses started to mount up.
So, what makes this season different?

Really, it has just been the dynamic play of the Cavs second unit. Throughout LeBron James’ second tenure in Cleveland, he has not had a bench as capable as the one he currently has. Behind Dwyane Wade, Jeff Green, and Kyle Korver, the Cavaliers’ bench has been a force. Over the last two seasons, the Cavaliers have finished 28th in bench points per game. This season, they are top 5 in the association, averaging 40.7 per game, which almost doubles their average from the last two seasons.
However, that doesn’t mean a trade is not possible, but it does mean the Cavaliers will not be trading for just another role player. This winter, if the Cavaliers make a trade, it only makes sense to make one that impacts their starting lineup, one that gives them a better chance against any foe from the Western Conference. That’s one reason why the trade rumors of Paul George, DeMarcus Cousins, and DeAndre Jordan possibly joining the Cavaliers, while far from likely, are reasonable. The Cavaliers might still be one piece away from truly challenging Golden State or even Hoston, and one of those three superstars could be that piece.

That said, this trade deadline could be one of the most talked about in recent NBA history if the Cavaliers decide to make a blockbuster trade, or it could be a rather quiet one in Cleveland.
