Jeff Green, after throwing down one of the most electrifying dunks of the preseason, could be in for a big role with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Unlike Jose Calderon, one of the other veterans the Cleveland Cavaliers added this offseason, Jeff Green has proven that he might be capable of playing a significant role for this team. In the Cavs’ third preseason game, Green threw down the dunk of the preseason against the Wizards.

According to FOX Sports Cavaliers’ depth chart, Jeff Green will be getting most of his minutes behind Jae Crowder as a power forward. This will keep Green in the position he is most familiar with. The 6-foot-9 Georgetown University product will be able to captain the second unit. Obviously, at 31, Green is still a very capable athlete.

In the Cavaliers’ third preseason game, which they ended up losing, Green scored 19 points and had that absolute poster of a dunk. With all of the starters resting, Green proved to be much more efficient than Cedi Osman and Channing Frye, his two competitors for minutes. Osman went just 2-for-5 and Frye was a poor 1-for-5 from the field. Of the three, Green has clearly been the superior player so far this preseason, so his minutes should be steady in Lue’s rotation.

In his sixty-nine game stint with the Magic last season, Green had some of his worst numbers of his career. A career-low 9.2 points coupled with a career-low 39.4% from the field should have warranted some caution from the Cavaliers before signing him. But, for just $2.3 million, the Cavaliers and Green could be a fantastic combination that helps the nine-year vet finally get to a conference finals. Green, in his five playoff appearances, has yet to make it to a conference finals.

The Cavaliers have seen a steady flow of production from their recent signees including big preseason games from Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade. This team, as long as they stay healthy, could be one of the best in the NBA. According to Jeff Green (via 247 Sports), the Cavaliers are a “no-brainer” to win the Finals.

While the Cavaliers are not even favorite this season, the tenacity that Green is showing is certainly a plus. At only 31, Green still has quality years in the NBA, and he could definitely prove his worth this season on his veteran’s minimum contract.

Green could be in for a huge bounce-back season.
