Cleveland Cavaliers: What’s the maximum that Carmelo Anthony is worth?

Carmelo Anthony, who has a no-trade clause in his contract, released his potential destination, and the Cleveland Cavaliers were one of them.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported a list of potential teams that Carmelo Anthony would waive his no-trade clause for. The Cleveland Cavaliers are on that list. Along with the Cavaliers, the list also has the Rockets, Thunder, and possibly the Trail Blazers.

Woj said this about the Cavaliers situation:

"Carmelo Anthony, a 10-time NBA All-Star, has delivered the New York Knicks an expanded list of teams — including the Cleveland Cavaliers — with which he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause, league sources told ESPN."

Woj reported that the Rockets are still the preferred destinations with the other teams coming into play in case a deal can’t be finalized there. Before the Cavaliers, who could use Anthony’s services, even consider the 10-time All-Star, they must first set their borders.

The Cleveland Cavaliers traded their other superstar in Kyrie Irving this offseason. He was dealt for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and the Brooklyn Nets’ 2018 first-round pick. As I scrolled through Twitter, I saw some fans and reporters suggesting the Cavaliers give up that 2018 first-round pick. That would be an enormous mistake. That pick is the Cavaliers future and unless they get a current superstar like DeMarcus Cousins, it should stay in Cleveland.

The Cavs have young talent that they could flip for Melo. Personally, I think the most the Cavaliers should give up for Anthony, who is certainly an aging star, is Cedi Osman and Ante Zizic. That’s a couple young, bright talents for a star that the Knicks do not even want in their future. When it boils down to it, the Knicks are looking for youth and picks. If they’re looking for picks, they might not want to call Cleveland.

Carmelo Anthony, who has averaged over 20 points per game every season of his career, was the league’s scoring champion during the 2012-2013 season, and he still has gas left in the tank. In absolutely no way am I saying that his scoring wouldn’t be a huge help for the championship-caliber team.

I am saying that the Cavaliers need to think twice before they look into dealing for Melo. Just like they did in the Kyrie Irving trade, the Cavaliers need to set a bar and not let whatever deal they’re offered fall short of it.
