Kendrick Perkins joined the Cleveland Cavaliers team at LeBron James’ minicamp. In addition, Perkins will have the opportunity to make the roster.

When you take a look at this picture, via the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Twitter page, you will see center Kendrick Perkins amongst the players.

According to cleveland.com, Perkins was invited to the Cavs training camp, which begins next week. Perkins signed with the Cavaliers back in the 2015 season. However, he only appeared in 17 games, playing around 9.8 minutes per game.

Perkins last played for the New Orleans Pelicans during the 2015-2016 season. In an interview with the Boston Globe, Perkins appears to be hungry for another shot in the league.

"“The body feels good, man, I’m just sitting here waiting on an opportunity,” he said. “Hopefully I can get a training camp invite soon. I want to earn my way. I don’t want nobody to give me nothing. So I’ve been working hard, going two or three times a day, working and grinding. I’m just trying to stay with it.”"

While Perkins’ career stats of 5.4 points and 5.8 rebounds aren’t very glamorous, he brings a lot to the table. He is undoubtedly one of the toughest players in the league. His grit and grind is far and few between in the present day NBA. Something the Cavaliers certainly lacked last season.

The Cavaliers were in desperate need for a rim protector for almost all of last season. While the Cavs did bring in Andrew Bogut in hopes to fill that role, he fractured his left tibia minutes into his Cavaliers debut.

In fact, the Cavs were interested in bringing Bogut back this offseason. According to David Aldridge, Cleveland was “in the mix” for Bogut before he eventually chose to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Cavs do have two backup centers currently on their roster. Former G-League defensive player of the year, Walter Tavares, and newly acquired rookie, Ante Zizic. Both are considerably young with Tavares being 25 years of age, and Zizic only being 20.

The Cavaliers could be looking for a veteran big man to start the season, or could simply be bringing Perkins to training camp to mentor the two young centers. Either way, the Cavs would have to cut somebody on their current roster in order to bring in Perkins.
