Trade: Shump to the Raptors, Fred VanVleet and a second-round pick to the Cavs

Let’s just say it would be smart for the Cleveland Cavaliers to be prepared with a solid backup point guard.

Jose Calderon will not cut it. Isaiah Thomas might be out until the All-Star break, and his hip injury could continue to nag him. Derrick Rose, on the other hand, has had injuries on both his knees and struggled throughout his career to stay on the floor. The Cavaliers need to be prepared with a point guard that won’t get injured.

VanVleet would be the perfect addition. He only averaged 2.9 points per game last season, but VanVleet is an above average defender. In his 37 games, the young point guard posted a 91.5 defensive rating. That’s far below the Cavaliers 108.0 defensive rating and still far lower than the Raptors’ 104.9. VanVleet won the Missouri Valley Conference player of the year twice at Witchita State, and while the 23-year-old might never become a true NBA star, just like Corey Joseph, he could present a matchup nightmare for opposing point guards one day.

The Raptors have shown interest in Shump and getting a valuable asset in VanVleet and possibly a pick back would be a great move for Cleveland.
