Cleveland Cavaliers receive future second round pick to finalize Irving deal
The bombshell Kyrie Irving-Isaiah Thomas trade between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics was made official on Wednesday night.
The Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics agreed to finalize their blockbuster trade, made last week. The deal will see Kyrie Irving come to Boston in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and the Brooklyn Nets’ 2018 first round pick.
After a week of deliberation and threats to rescind the offer, the addition of a 2020 second round draft pick allowed the teams to make the deal official. The teams had to agree on the deal before 10:00 am on Thursday morning.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the pick that closed the deal comes via the Miami Heat. Ironically, the Heat were reportedly on Irving’s list of preferred trade destinations, according to ESPN’s Chris Haynes.
The Cavaliers reportedly wanted more value from Boston in the trade after learning of the severity of Isaiah Thomas’ hip injury. Thomas suffered the injury in the Eastern Conference Finals versus the Cavs, and the ailment could potentially sideline him for several months.
Now that they have received two draft picks from Boston, the Cavaliers can afford to be a bigger player when it comes to potential trades. The team has the option to move those picks for proven veterans that can help them contend, or they can simply hold on to them and draft potential franchise cornerstones.
The Cavaliers accepted the most valuable trade they were offered even with the Bucks offer on the table. This offer gives them additional depth, a viable scoring replacement for Irving, and the future assets that they craved all along. It was a great deal for both teams, and maybe the Boston Celtics will finally be able to truly compete with the Cavaliers.
