Figuring out what exactly a femoral-acetabular impingement with a labral tear is, and if Isaiah Thomas’ injury could halt this trade for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The chaotic summer that is the Cleveland Cavaliers’ season keeps getting crazier.

Apparently, Isaiah Thomas’ injured hip is not up to code.

He originally hurt it during a regular season game against the Timberwolves back in March. He ironically re-injured it against the Cavs during the Eastern Conference Finals.

The apparent injury may have been re-aggravated when Thomas bumped into Kevin Love while fighting a screen.

The official diagnosis is a right femoral-ace tabular impingement with a labral tear.

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, it’s when additional bone marrow grows along the bone that makes the hip-joint. The extra bone makes movement in the hip uncomfortable as well as stunting proper movement.

This part of the injury occurred two months before the playoffs. He sat out the two games following the incident, which resulted in a total of four days’ rest.

Due to increased stress to the area, he tore his labrum, which, according to Washington Orthopedic & Sports Medicine, is a “fibrocartilaginous ring that encircles the superior 80% of the acetabulum.”

In layman’s terms, it’s the thing that surrounds the hip socket.

What this means for the proposed trade

The Boston Celtics determined in July that Thomas would not require surgery to mend his injured hip.

The following is a quote by team president Danny Ainge (retrieved from CBS Sports.)

"“Isaiah is making good progress,” Ainge said. “He’s out on the court, he’s shooting. He’s full speed ahead on the stationary bike and working in the swimming pool. He’s progressing nicely.”"

The team’s medical staff did not deem the injury severe, so it would seem.

The Cavaliers’ staff thought differently.

Adrian Wojnarowski reported Friday that Cleveland had reservations about going through with the trade after Thomas’ physical.

Cleveland may ask for additional assets to complete the deal. This may include a role player or a draft pick, potentially the Lakers’ 2018 protected first round pick.

We’ll see what unfolds over the next few weeks, but at the moment it seems like the Cavaliers have an advantage negotiation-wise.
