Chauncey Billups may just take the job with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

According to Keith Britton, the executive producer of 92.3 The Fan, Chauncey Billups is “very excited” about the opportunity to be the Cleveland Cavaliers’ president of basketball operations. He also has “a couple” more meetings planned with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert.

Britton’s information came second-hand but his source is credible. Richard “Rip” Hamilton played for the Detroit Pistons for nine seasons and was Billups’ teammate for seven, including in the 2003-2004 season when the Detroit Pistons defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 4-1 in the 2004 NBA Finals. Billups and Hamilton both arrived on the Pistons in the 2002-2003 season.

According to Jason Lloyd of The Athletic, Billups has been offered a five-year deal to become the president of basketball operations for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Billups has yet to accept despite being the only individual interviewed for the job.

It’s still unclear whether assistant general manager Koby Altman will continue to act as general manager if Billups accepts the offer, as Billups’ job title could allow him to make decisions on who the next general manager will be.

According to USA Today’s Sam Amick, Billups’ decision is being held up by the possibility that LeBron James will leave next summer and the idea that he’d have to be critical of one of his best friends in Cavs head coach Tyronn Lue.

While Amick is very credible and respectable, it’s hard to believe Billups would have even gone to the first meeting he had with the Cavs if these two factors were weighing so heavily in his decision.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reports that what’s really holding up the deal is Billups’ current family and work situation. He lives in Denver, Colorado, where his daughter will be a senior in high school, and commutes to Los Angeles, California to work at ESPN.

Being the president of basketball operations for the Cleveland Cavaliers may require the type of commitment that he can’t commute to though. He’d possibly have to move and uproot his family and that is a rational concern for Billups to have.

Still, while there hasn’t been much news on Billups as of late as he considers his options, it’s hard to believe he would take this much time to make a decision to decline the offer. I can’t help but picture him spending as much time with his family as possible while researching places to live and schools in Cleveland.

The news that Billups is excited and has more meetings planned with Cleveland only aids that idea that he’ll accept the job.
