What he can bring to the Cleveland Cavaliers:
Perimeter defense, heady plays, locker room leadership
Dahntay Jones is a player the Cleveland Cavaliers should sign in the offseason because of his effect on the team’s ability to overcome adversity. When players are arguing with each other during games, Jones has no problem shutting the argument down and reminding them that they’re teammates. He’ll step in to be an “enforcer” for his team though.
He’s outspoken. He’s a veteran. He’s a leader.
He’s a guy that the Cleveland Cavaliers like.
When considering that James Jones, who will be a free agent in the offseason, is likely to retire at the end of the season, D. Jones has tremendous off-court value.
In-game, at this point in his career, Jones is a player who will get most of his points off of assists.
As a spot-up shooter, he doesn’t have a history of shooting the three-ball consistently but it’s a shot he can certainly hit. Jones, like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade and DeMar Derozan, gets a lot of his points after posting up in the midrange area. This could result in a drive, a nifty dropstep and spin move to get to the rim or a shot.
Because of his ability to stay in tip-top shape, Jones is still a threat when driving the ball to the rim because he has the quickness, speed and explosiveness to do damage inside.
Defensively, Jones is capable of guarding every position on the perimeter, as well as some small-ball power forwards, with his 6-foot-6, 225 pounds frame. He moves his feet well, has great defensive awareness and technique, constantly hounding his man.
