It’s never to early to look at what the Cleveland Cavaliers may do in free agency. This summer, there are a couple of former All-Star guards who should be available for the Cavs.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have been the best team in the Eastern Conference from the moment they signed LeBron James in free agency.
However, the moves they’ve made in the three years since James returned to the Land have handicapped them in terms of the cap space they have and thus, the contracts they can hand out. This offseason, the Cleveland Cavaliers will have to rely on minimum contracts and the lure of playing with LeBron to attract free agents.
It’s not much different than they have in years past. With two trade exceptions valued at $4.8 million, the Cavs may try to swing a trade to shore up their depth as well.
The Cleveland Cavaliers backcourt depth, in particular, will be important next season; Deron Williams hits free agency this summer and the Cavs will need to have a veteran backup behind Irving for at least one more season as Kay Felder enters his sophomore year.
With the year J.R. Smith had, headlined by injuries and inconsistency on the court, the Cavs would be wise to address their depth at shooting guard. Iman Shumpert, who is already labeled as injury-prone and has been inconsistent since his inception in the NBA, isn’t the only depth the Cavs can have at shooting guard.
However, with Turkish sensation Cedi Osman coming over next season, will the Cavs need to sign a shooting guard? With Dahntay Jones providing valuable locker room leadership, will he be back?
It largely depends on if Richard Jefferson retires at the end of the season.
If he does, the Cavs have space for both Osman and a player like Jones. However, the Cavs could also sign Osman to a two-way contract and have him play in the NBA G-League to aid his adjustment to the NBA regardless.
If that’s the case, there are a couple of guards that the Cavs could sign.
