Cleveland Cavaliers: Andrew Bogut Injured In His Debut, Larry Sanders On Deck At Center
Andrew Bogut is out indefinitely after fracturing his tibia in his Cleveland Cavaliers debut. Larry Sanders, you’re on deck.
Well, that was quick. Andrew Bogut, who was making his debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers Monday night as the defending champs took on the Miami Heat, is out indefinitely after suffering a fractured left tibia in his first minute of action. Larry Sanders may be signed soon if Bogut is waived.
Here’s the play below:
Bogut, who jumped out to the three-point line to contest a shot attempt from Okaro White, injured his leg as the two collided. Bogut was coming down from midair, after not playing or practicing for weeks, and the combination of his inactivity, the collision and his leg bearing the brunt of his 260 pound frame could have caused the fracture to Bogut’s left leg.
Bogut, who was looked at as a player who could spell Tristan Thompson, protect the rim, clean the glass and be a playmaker for the team with his passing ability, will likely be waived as the injury makes it impossible for him to return to the team before the end of the postseason.
Some will remember but before the Cavs signed Bogut but according to Sam Amico of Amico Hoops, the Cavs met with Sanders’ agent two weeks ago.
Sanders, who hasn’t played since the 2014-2015 season, is an athletic rim-protector and rebounder who is more mobile than Bogut and at 28-years-old, a player who the Cavs could use this season and beyond. Sanders isn’t as skilled as Bogut was, as he’s not able to put the ball on the floor and make plays as a facilitator in transition. However, he’s a smart player who doesn’t get trapped in double-teams and will get the ball to right player.
With Bogut injured, the Cavs could turn back to Sanders.
The Cavs opted not to sign Sanders as longtime target Bogut was engaged in buyout talks.
Now, Sanders may finally get his chance at an NBA comeback.
Sanders, a former first overall pick who has averaged as many as 2.8 blocks per season, has a good chance to be Tristan Thompson’s permanent backup if he works hard. With the talent he has, it could all work out.
