Deron Williams has officially signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

According to Joe Vardon of cleveland.com, Deron Williams has officially signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Williams, who has averaged 16.6 points and 8.2 assists per game in his 12 seasons as a pro, has been in Cleveland’s crosshairs all season.

The former third overall pick and three-time All-Star is on his fourth (technically) team after drama-filled career brought him to the Dallas Mavericks. There, the team assembled a team with a playoff-worthy starting lineup on paper. Unfortunately, the Mavs have dealt with injuries all season and seem to be headed towards a rebuild centered around Harrison Barnes.

Williams, who negotiated a buyout with the Mavericks on Thursday, is now expected to play for a championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Williams be backing up Kyrie Irving as the floor general for the second unit in a role that’s unfamiliar to him as he’s started in 767 games since his rookie year. Kyle Korver, who was Williams’ teammate from 2007-2010 with the Utah Jazz, expects for Williams to be fitting as a playmaker for the bench. He’ll be setting up Korver and Channing Frye from behind the arc while scoring along the perimeter, in the post and in the pick-and-roll himself. Though he’s declining athletically, he can be hid on shooting guards with his 6-foot-3, 200 pound frame.

This is a move that will also coincide with more rest for LeBron James, and perhaps greater efficiency for Kyrie Irving, as the two floor generals are able to let Williams come in and orchestrate the second unit offense. Rest assured that Lue will play Williams in lineups with the Big Three as he acts as the primary facilitator, nonetheless, Williams is the player that will allow the Cavs to lower James’ minutes as they enter the playoffs.

Remember when LeBron needed a point guard? A playmaker.

Williams kills two birds with one stone as the defending champs march towards the NBA Finals.
