Cleveland Cavaliers: 5 Trades The Team Can Make Before The NBA Trade Deadline
Dallas Mavericks
The Cleveland Cavaliers have been interested Deron Williams for a while and there was hope that he would emerge as a free agent candidate after completing a buyout with the Dallas Mavericks. However, Williams is 32-years-old and making $9 million on the final year of his contract. It’s unlikely he wants a buyout even if it means playing for a contender because it’s a lot of money to give up now and he’ll be a free agent in the summer, after a very solid year of basketball, anyways.
This season, Williams is averaging 13.1 points and 6.5 assists per game. Although he can still get to the rim and be a playmaker, especially after receiving a screen with his passing ability, Williams gets a fair amount of his offense from long twos and three-point attempts. On those attempts, Williams shoots 47.0 percent on shots from 16 feet to three-point range and 34.8 percent on shots from three-point range. He’s knocking down 44.4 percent of his corner threes.
While this trade doesn’t result in the Cavs getting any young talent, Williams is a three-time All-Star. With their two open roster spots, the Cavs could sign Larry Sanders and re-sign Derrick Williams. Their bench will be full of former starters and feature quite a few high-profile names at that point.
The talent level of the bench will be off the charts, even if it takes them a little time to get acclimated to each other and the Cavs starters.
