SG Monta Ellis

2016-2017 season averages: 8.1 points, 3.2 assists per game

What he can bring to the Cleveland Cavaliers:

A little known fact about Monta Ellis is he’s one of the top 50 players to come into the NBA when looking at his steals per game average and he’s top 10 on the active player list when it comes to on-court thefts.

So, when considering what Ellis can bring to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the first thought should probably be about his defensive contributions rather than his offensive ones. The Cleveland Cavaliers second unit only has one standout defender getting regular minutes and that’s the newly acquired Derrick Williams. Ellis is a player who should be able to play off of the strong team defense that starts when Williams is on the court, jump passing lanes and get out in transition.

In a halfcourt set, the 6-foot-3 Ellis isn’t as quick as he was in his prime but he’s still able to blow past defenders on the perimeter. His ball-handling and his ability to make the long two don’t let defenders give him too much space out there despite shooting 31.3 percent from three-point range for his career. Ellis should be expected to take the bulk of his shots around the rim within the Cavaliers second unit and when a second defender comes to contest, as he’s a great finisher inside, he should be able to easily kick the ball out to open shooters.

Ellis is a player that will let Irving rest more than James because he’s more of a scorer than a facilitator. However, resting both is of the utmost importance as the playoffs draw close.
