NBA: Is the Foretold Expansion True or False?
By Simon Hannig
Recently, a story that has garnered a lot of attention from 16winsaring.com where the NBA is looking to expand to 32 teams with Seattle and Mexico City as frontrunners for possible expansion.
According to NBA Spokesman Mike Bass: “The blog post is complete fabrication, and we have no plans for expansion at this time.”
With the NBA completing its new CBA deal and with the league in a healthy state, there have been some rumors about possible expansion, but the NBA is not looking at expansion at this time.
For years now, Seattle has been rumored about a possible NBA expansion team, even most recently the Sacramento Kings almost moved to Seattle, but that is not happening soon.
Don’t expect any new teams in Seattle or Mexico City anytime soon.
Cons of expansion
With the thought of the possible expansion, there are a ton of pros and cons for expansion in the NBA. For this article, I will go through with the cons.
1.) Not enough talent — There is not enough talent to go around in the NBA these days with super teams. The best teams in the league are Cleveland, Golden State and San Antonio. With possible expansion, teams can most likely protect up to eight players on their roster and the rest go through expansion draft. The rest are usually bench players and role players, which won’t garner enough attention in new NBA cities.
2.) NBA Draft — With two new teams if the NBA ever decides to expand, you would have to expand the draft and possibly redo the lottery system. The NBA Draft use to be more than two rounds. If the NBA ever decides to expand, they may have to add another round or two for the two new teams. Which would create a hassle for the current 30 NBA teams.

3.) Arena’s — The possible expansion in the NBA in new cities could have an effect of those cities possibly getting a brand new arena. With the cost of arena’s nowadays, it could be nearly impossible for those cities. Even renovations are expensive. We’ve seen Seattle having a difficult time in getting a new arena, which is why they relocated. Sacramento almost had to relocate as well. If you want to know the cost of brand new arena’s, Golden State’s brand new Chase Center will cost more than a billion dollars, which a lot of cities don’t have.
