The Big Three 3.0

Tyronn Lue has made his biggest impression as head coach so far by both controlling James and devising a strategy that allows the Big Three to perform at their optimal level.

As a group they make quick decisions, get out and run in the fast break, use great ball movement and have a bevy of shooting specialists that will allow them to attack the paint.

Kyrie Irving attacks the whole game because he can. He’s probably the best ball-handler in the league and not only can score from all levels, but does. His ability to get a shot off from anywhere and make it is outstanding and Irving subsequently is the Cavs leading scorer. He plays off the ball a lot these days, hands on his knees in the corner, like a true shooting guard.

Love has free rein and is allowed to be aggressive. While continuing to demonstrate the three-point stroke that made him a transcendental force in the league in 2010, Love has been in the post more this season as well. Those two things, along with a new wrinkle to his game that comes in the form of dribble-drives from the perimeter and the resulting free throw attempts, allow him to be the Cavs second leading scorer.

James is the primary facilitator and manages to get the ball to every Cav possible. It’s no wonder, when speaking to CNN’s Motez Bishara, Los Angeles Rams guard Rodger Saffold said he believes James would be the perfect NFL quarterback. James is also the Cavs in-house demolition ball and when he heads towards the paint it usually results in points. As a scorer, James, who is of course “LeBron James”, still treats fans to glorious spectacles of outside shooting and bully-ball as he demonstrates his abilities in the post.

Lue’s ability to get the Big Three in a system that caters to all their abilities is why the Cavs made him their head coach. It’s also why the Warriors aren’t going to be able to stop them offensively.
