Cleveland Cavaliers free agent J.R. Smith and New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis are having a war of words on Twitter. The feud may live on through the finish of the next NBA season with what’s been said by the two.

After Thursday Night Football’s contest between the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills, Smith had a few choice words for the Jets’ All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis after he was beat for a touchdown by third-year pro Marquise Goodwin for an 84-yard touchdown.

Goodwin, a former Olympian in 2012 who finished tenth in the long jump, received a pass from quarterback Tyrod Taylor along the sidelines. After he caught it, he left one of the best cornerbacks of his generation in the dust.

After this play, the social media world exploded. Revis, who earned the nickname “Revis Island” for his ability to cover opposing wide receivers with no help, had just gotten burned by a relatively unknown Buffalo Bills wide receiver. In the midst of the Twitter version of a “Comedy Central Roast” about Revis, Cleveland Cavaliers free agent shooting guard J.R. Smith chimed in.

This had to sting. Revis, acting accordingly, responded to Smith a day later with a quip of his own.

Now, Revis does acknowledge here that Smith will forever be memorable, at least in Cleveland, as the starting shooting guard for the team that brought the franchise its first NBA championship. He’ll be a fan favorite of Cavaliers fans after he helped end the city’s 52-year major sports championship drought with an assist on “The Block”.

The flame-throwing Smith lit up from behind the arc all season as he finished with the third-most threes in the league, trailing the Golden State Warriors “Splash Brothers” tandem of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

While Smith may not be a Hall of Fame player based on his career, he’d be a Ring of Fame-worthy player for the Cleveland Cavaliers should he re-sign with the team before the start of the NBA season.

Of course, Smith had to respond. What else would “The Pipe” do? However, Smith kept it classy and issued out a personal challenge to a player he acknowledged as worthy of the Hall of Fame. The response shows Smith’s progress as a player and a professional.

While not being superstar player, Smith has managed to a be a superstar in a role. Off-the-court, Smith is a bigger name than Revis is on the field.

This spat may not be over but it has been entertaining. Fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers can only hope that Smith re-signs before the season so he, and the team, can continue to bring championships to the city and make history.
