Cast Kyrie Irving as Batman and LeBron James as Superman after taking over Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
LeBron is the 6’8″, 250 lb. freight train coming at you fast. He plays so controlled, but so aggressive. He tosses defenders aside like ragdolls on his way to the rim. He shoots from all levels of the floor as well, but like Kyrie, wants to go downhill as much as possible. But the way he does it isn’t by putting the ball on a string and having a silky smooth shot, it’s to run right through you, Juggernaut style.
At this point, LeBron has fine-tuned his game to near perfection. He’s not Batman, he’s Superman. In Game 1, James finished 11-13 from the field because of a steady diet of layups and dunks through contact and because of his strength.
If the Raptors are going to give him the paint, they’re going to be in for a long series. Game 1 was a playoff career high for James, making 84.7% of his field goal attempts. He’s super strong, he can fly, he’s inhumanly invincible and healthy, and his x-ray vision on the court is like a beam of death for the other team. While his teammates usually found him for easy dunks and layups, he sprayed it to them to score all over the court.
The ever-elusive Kyrie is Batman.
He’s 6’3″, 193 lb., not a behemoth, but no small man by any means. He disappears from you in the black of the night only to leave you suspended on a fire escape. He has tricks and inventions that you’ve never seen and that have you looking silly. Irving is the player who scores from all levels of the floor during every game. He does it beautifully. Razzling and dazzling. Rocking your knees to your ankles and putting your career to sleep. He’s so naturally talented, at times he looks like he may be one of the best players the game has ever seen.
In Game 1, Kyrie Irving scored 27 points on 11-17 shooting in sensational fashion. He crossed guys up on the way to the rim or just ran through or past them, he pulled up from midrange, he got a three to go from the corner. Not to be outdone in the assist category by LeBron in this game, he dished out 5 dimes.
Kyrie’s other side is as a light-hearted and humorous bachelor with a lot of money. James’ other side is devoted to his Lois Lane, his Martha, his family. His sons were born with supernatural basketball talents and control the fate of their father’s future. LeBron is merciful though he’s really a basketball god. Kyrie, a mentee of the Black Mamba (The League of Shadows’ Ra’s al Ghul), takes over the game as he ruthlessly strikes opposing defenses.
LeBron was tremendous on defense in Game 1. He held the Toronto Raptors to 3 points on 1-6 shooting as the primary defender. He also had 2 steals and 1 block. Because of defense like that, there’s only been one game in these playoffs when the opponent has shot over 50% from the field. Kyrie Irving, not lauded for his defensive production, finished the game with 2 steals and 2 blocks defensively. Mind you, there were only 3 blocks in total from the regular rotation of players in the game. In addition, aided by his teammates, he held opposing point guards Kyle Lowry and Cory Joseph to a combined 5-20 shooting from the field and 0-9 from three.

They complement each other in their offensive styles and how they score. They complement each other in terms of personality, with Kyrie’s light-hearted nature sure to rub off on the ultra-focused LeBron and LeBron’s seriousness sure to help Kyrie reach his peak. Like James said upon his return, he wanted to come back because of the opportunity to play with Irving. The Decision II is paying off, as both players belong in the superstar spotlight, not just LeBron. And the team isn’t just playing for peanuts, they’re rolling through the playoff competition, the best their conference had to offer.
Do you believe that Kyrie Irving, like LeBron James, is top level superstar? Do you believe they have what it takes to win in the NBA Finals?
