Mark this under trades that wouldn’t work for either team but still fun to talk about. Love gets out to LA as the Lakers try to draw Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook in the next couple of years. The Lakers don’t usually wait for their young talent to develop so trading their last two lottery picks for a bonafide star is reasonable. Lou Williams has to be added to get salaries to work.

For the Cavs this is a gamble on keeping their window open longer while adding trade assets. Russell can play on or off the ball, has good size, a good stroke and is a good defender. Julius Randle has (far?) less range than Love but can rebound and has a little Zach Randolph to his game. Ryan Kelly gives them some shooting from a big while Williams has to be added and can be an electric piece off the bench offensively.

Neither team would likely like this trade but it creates interesting scenarios for now and into the future. Russell and Randle could have trade value later for the Cavs or develop into a dynamic young core with Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson around LeBron James.

If Love helps draw Durant or Westbrook he would already be worth whatever the Lakers had to give up.
