Center
Timofey Mozgov
Mozgov’s addition made, literally, a big impact on the Cavs. The 7’1″ Russian takes up a ton of space in the key, blocks and alter shots and can close on players quickly. Offensively, Timo is still finding his place but showed improvement when he came to the Cavs.
Mozgov averaged 10.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. He averaged 2 more points a game while shooting 9% better from the field with the Cavs than the Nuggets, an impressive 59%. Even in the Finals, Mozgov’s ability on the block caused problems for the Warriors.
Timo’s familiarity with David Blatt’s offense and having an off-season to get comfortable with the rest of his teammates could help him continue to develop. Being in a contract year when the Salary Cap is expected to skyrocket could also help motivate a big year for the big guy.
Duncan is an all time great but will be moving to center next to Aldridge which will be interesting. At 39, Duncan has still be very productive for the Spurs. More importantly, Duncan sets the standard for what it means to play for this franchise. This year might be his last so we expect one last push from the veteran big guy.
Last year, Duncan had one of his lowest statistical seasons of his career. Only 13.9 points and 9.1 rebounds, the veteran still knows how to get things done but knows his limits. With Aldridge working from the post and mid-range, Duncan will work the opposite.
Advantage
Even at 39, and 40 near the end of the season, Duncan still gets the nod here of Mozgov. Timo could have a big season for the Cavs but for one year, Duncan would get the nod. Obviously, long-term Mozgov would be the guy.
