Kyrie Irving may have gone to college, unlike LeBron James, but just like his teammate he has never won a national championship and is relishing in the latest win by Duke.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to win their first NBA title with LeBron James and for guys like Kyrie Irving it would be their first championship ever. This isn’t just at the NBA level, but at the college level too as Kyrie Irving has never won a championship in his collegiate or professional playing career.
He spent one season at Duke in 2010-11 before leaving to get drafted No. 1 overall by the Cavaliers. That one season he spent at Duke ended in the Sweet Sixteen, and that’s as close as Kyrie Irving has come to a title since then.
With the National Championship returning to Duke, Kyrie Irving took to Twitter to celebrate with his former team and cheer on his one-time head coach.
You can’t blame Kyrie Irving for being happy about the win, as this is his alma mater. LeBron James is happy for Coach K because the two have ties to USA basketball — and all three form an interesting trio that could reunite someday in the future.
That’s a pipe dream, but the fact that both Duke and the Cavaliers could be champions in the same season isn’t. Kyrie arrived at Duke the year after they won a title and left a few years before they won another, and that could serve as motivation for him to go hard and get on in Cleveland this season.
