Cavs Rumor: Team Interested in Two PG in China
The Cleveland Cavaliers roster has come together quite well. They added a big man capable of clogging the paint, blocking and contesting shots, setting great screens and even knocking open mid-range shots. Lets call Timofey Mozgov the next coming of Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Z.0, Z2 or T.0 have been thrown around as possible nicknames to replace Timo. They added two wing players in J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert, players whose fit seems to be perfect for what the team needs around the Big 3.
A report this morning (New Window) says that the negative body language from the players had far more to do with the roster composition, and ability to move on in the playoffs, than it had to do with Coach David Blatt. With the additions, along with the return to health of LeBron James, the Cavs have looked great in their 5 game winning streak, and down right scary last night against the Charlotte Hornets. Be warned NBA, the Cavs are coming! (Also New Window)
Yet the Cavs still have one open roster spot and that has been an interesting issue. The Cavs could easily have signed a number of players to 10 day contracts to fill that spot for the time being. It is possible they felt like they already had a lot of players to get adjusted to the team and didn’t want to add another. It is also possible they have their eyes on a few different players to fill that role.
According to a Cavs rumor this morning, two players that could fill that role later in the season both play in China: Will Bynum and Bobby Brown. Jason Lloyd noted as much in his game wrap up from last night:
"18. If they don’t trade for a point guard, keep an eye on Will Bynum and Bobby Brown. Both are playing in China and won’t be available until after the Chinese playoffs in March, but the Cavs are interested in both. Bynum would be a much cleaner add than Brown, who still has two years left on his deal with DongGuan, but they’ll have competition."

Bynum is a name many fans know, no not because of Andrew Bynum, from his time with the Detroit Pistons. He is a steady point guard who played 7 years in the league. Brown on the other hand has very little NBA experience, two years, but is much more of a scoring point guard. Brown played for 4 different teams in the NBA but wasn’t able to stay around. In China, according to Lloyd, Brown is averaging 30.9 points per game.
The Cavs’ open roster spot still could be filled by Ray Allen. We covered this week (NW) that according to reports Allen has made demands that he get late game minutes with whatever team he signs with. He also isn’t a great fit for the Cavs who now have Smith, Shumpert and Kyrie Irving taking a majority of the backcourt minutes. He would join Mike Miller and James Jones as bench shooters with little other role.
Nate Robinson and Nate Wolters were both once reported to interest the Cavs. Wolters has since signed 2 ten day contracts with the New Orleans Pelicans while Nate Rob is reportedly looking to join the LA Clippers.
For now this Cavs rumor will just need to be filed away. China’s season and playoffs will push both players availability back to March. By that point the Cavs may have already filled their roster spot.
